One hundred calories seems to be the magic number when it comes to snacks. One hundred calories is disposable and won’t make much of a difference to our waistlines, right?
Most of those 100-calorie snacks are not healthy though and you’re still better off eating a snack that is packed full of high nutritional value like fruits, veggies, nuts and protein shakes.
We all need a treat once in a while and these 100-calorie snacks are all too tempting. But before long, you’re always reaching for one of these snacks and they’re only 100 calories, so what harm will eating three of them do?
It all adds up. But more to the point, you’re still eating 100 calories of sugar and bad fats. With healthy snacks like fruits, nuts and veggies, you get more vitamins, minerals and fiber, so your snacking counts for something. It’s not just something you do because you’re bored.
I’m not saying we can’t treat ourselves every once in a while, because we all need to. Life is too short. But if you’re always snacking on something full of fat and sugar, you life will be short, very, VERY short.
The other day, I was accused of being a fatist by one of my morbidly obese friends. And I admit I’m always bugging him to lose weight, thinking he will take the steps to change his life and become healthy. “You don’t think I’m healthy?” he says to me over two huge chocolate chip (read: chunk) cookies, as he stirs three sugars and two creams into his coffee. What do you say to that? Why is it so hard for people to recognize that eating like this is NOT healthy.
“Do you exercise regularly?” I ask him. “Yes,” he says, “I go to the gym once a week.” I insist that this is not regularly and so ensued a (friendly) argument. He regularly goes every Monday and to him that is regular or regular enough. My concerns are legitimate – he has a history of heart disease in his family and most don’t live past 60.
When did all this junk food become so acceptable? To some, eating fried foods every day for every meal is a way of life and perfectly normal. The rest of us are just health freaks who should mind their own business. Even when you go on holiday, you can’t escape it. You could travel to the remotest place on earth, to the farthest reaches of the globe, and you’ll still find a MacDonald’s full of patrons.
Why do we insist on abusing our bodies? You wouldn’t put diesel fuel into your car, so why would you feed your body on junk and expect it to perform? Treat your body well and it will treat you well back. You’ll live longer and you’ll experience a better quality of life. That means waking up in the morning full of energy. It means getting sick less often and taking fewer days off work. It means being able to get through your day with ease, without aches and pains and without reaching for that prescription bottle of high blood pressure pills or whatever.
It can’t be stressed enough. So put down that 100-calorie snack and reach for a juicy peach, a fist full of Omega-3-rich pistachios or a protein shake instead. Turn this into a habit and watch the transformation. It just takes one small step each and every day to reach your goals and there’s no time like the present.
