Polyphenols: The Trick to Weight Loss

A novel approach to managing weight issues in adults involves molasses and polyphenols.

Polyphenols: The Trick to Losing WeightPolyphenols or antioxidants possess many health benefits, and now molasses is showing that it too is healthy because of it richness in polyphenols. Results from an experiment conducted on mice shows that supplementing your diet with molasses extract, particularly if you eat a high fat diet, will help you to lose weight.

This study will be presented at the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior – the leading society in all areas of eating and drinking behaviors.

The experiment lasted for 12 weeks and tested three groups of mice – one fed on a high fat diet, one supplemented with 2% molasses extract and one fed 4% molasses extract. It was this last group that experienced significant weight loss after 12 weeks. This group weighed less, had lower BMI and reduced levels of leptin in the blood – a hormone produced by fat cells.

The effect of supplementing with molasses extract was an increase in energy expenditure and increased metabolism. Molasses is also an effective laxative.

However the scientists attribute this weight loss to the polyphenols within molasses.

“The addition of molasses extract to a high fat diet appears to reduce body weight and body fat levels primarily through reduced caloric absorption. Due to the increasing worldwide prevalence of obesity and associated health problems, supplementing food with molasses extract might be a way to address the escalating rates of overweight and obesity,” said Weisinger.

Clinical trials scheduled next year will provide the opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of molasses extract for weight control in humans.
